Google + Craig = The New Hotness

by Alex Stenback on April 13, 2005

Mapper_thumb_1This is week-old news, and we are starting to feel like shills for google, but it’s so good it is worth a quick post for those of you who don’t make the Real Estate/Blog rounds daily.

Paul Rademacher, with a simple but brilliantly executed idea, has created a mash-up application combining Craigslist and google maps.  The result is a great little tool which allows you to view all of the current Craigslist rental and real-estate-for-sale listings via a google map.

Try it out: Just click this link, then click on Minneapolis (or any other) area and watch the magic.

Why major real estate firms do not have an application like this available as part of their (mostly) horrifyingly bad ‘property search’ features is completely beyond our comprehension.

Part of the answer might be…because they have no idea this capability exists? I don’t really believe that, but who knows…. Are the IT leaders of the real estate brokers and software producers hip to the blog world? Inquiring minds want to know….

I don’t think its so much about being “hip” to the blog world as it is having the vision to create something better. I’ve always found the various real estate search features to be maddeningly poor from a user friendliness/interface standpoint. The great thing about technology and the web is that if you can imagine it, it can be done. Maybe that’s where they are missing the boat.

Jane & Alex: while we’re not currently the real estate “establishment”, you can count our company as one who a) is “hip” to the blog world AND b) has a vision for something better.

(we are part of a consortium who contribute to The FSBO Blog)

I can’t answer for everyone else, except to say that staying on the leading edge is so much work that perhaps most don’t have the heart for it. However, we are currently working on a custom integration of the Google Maps based on this Craigs-list application for the next version of our real estate ( website, due in just a few weeks.

I am curious, however, what makes search features “maddeningly poor” from your standpoint?
