Off-The-Grid in Northfield

by Alex Stenback on May 17, 2005

Collage2_3The Northfield Construction Company, one of the few blogging home builder/construction outfits we know of, is currently building an "Off-Grid" home for one of its customers near Northfield, MN.

Planned as a "net-zero" energy consumption home, the project features six photo-voltaic cells (solar panels), a wind powered generator, battery storage system, and a back-up propane generator (to charge batteries when mother nature falls short.)

Though we’re not exactly members of the "green" crowd, the idea of a home that generates as much energy as it uses has a certain appeal.  But we do wonder if this is achievable in a sunshine-deficient state like Minnesota without major adjustments to lifestyle and consumption patterns. After all, there are some things, like on-demand hot showers and year-round 70 degree temps, that civilized people just don’t do without.  We’ll watch this project as it develops.

I’m in Northern New Mexico and am trying to find a lender for a client who would like to buy a 1yr old log home that is off grid. Do you or anyone out there know of any banks, etc. that loan to off grid homes? We get this here regularly. Thank you, Anna

Hi.
I am a loan officer that has funded many off the grid homes at conventional rates. Currently, I am working on a construction loan for a log home that is off the grid.

CAn you direct me to a lender who will finance an off-grid prebuilt house in NH?
