Finland, MN: Vacation Homes to put the FUN back in Superfund.

Recall the saga of the Colorado Titan-One Missile Base, which was offered on ebay as a one-of-a-kind vacation estate?

Well, it appears we’ve now got our own piece of Cold War Memorabilia being re-imagined as real estate. According to an article over at MPR the Finland, MN Air Base (which once was manned by 350 cold warriors whose mission was to eavesdrop on the USSR) could become vacation homes.

But before heading North at a high rate of speed to plunk down your reservation, you’d be wise to let them work through a few, ahem, issues, with the site.  Not the least of which is the fact that the former air base was marinated in fuel and chemicals for most of its operational life.  From the article:

…[T]his mountaintop is not as clean as its surroundings."There’s a lot of contamination," Abazs says.  "Diesel contamination, PCBs.  So this is now a Superfund site."

Gotta love that diesel fuel and white pine scent in the air…and hey, we hear the views are killer.

I hope that none of the old undiscovered missile systems are not still locked on this location as a strategic target :)
