You Can No Longer Get Your Mortgage in the Back of a Van

by Alex Stenback on January 8, 2009

Speaking of increased documentation requirements, turn times, and scrutiny, here’s an email from a long time client in response to a list of items needed for their loan application:

“Are you for real with all this?  Didn’t I used to be able to just sign a piece of paper in the back of a van or something?”

I could not have summarized the sea change in underwriting and documentation requirements better myself.

This is why I love my clients.

That is awesome.

Where can I pick up a slightly used mortgage van for cheap?

I think I saw a guy doing a mortgage out of a 1986 Buick Skyhawk once! A van is pretty nice compared to that.

Alex,

I read this and my Coke nearly sprayed out my nose. I have been in the business only 5 years so I haven’t seen everything but where I live (Riverside County, CA) everyone and there grandma were doing mortgages through MLM companies. I am willing to bet 70% of all the loans done were originated from part time unlicensed loan officers. Unfortunatley, many of those people are trying to con people into stop paying their mortgage in order to get a loan modifications with a huge principle reduction.
